From high school in 2013 to Super Rugby in 2014 and selection for the Barbarians against Australia late in the season, Thomas du Toit's rapid ascension delivered a season to remember.
After playing his youth rugby with the Boland Cavaliers and Western Province, Do Toit moved to Durban and joined the Sharks ahead of the 2014 season, making 14 senior provincial appearances and four at Super Rugby level, including the Finals Series where he made a huge impression.
His senior debut at Vodacom Cup level yielded a try against the Border Bulldogs and earned his first start three weeks later against the Free State Cheetahs.
Du Toit was included as part of the South African squad that competed in the 2014 Junior World Championship and one suspects it is just the first of many occasions we will see this impressive young man don the green and gold.
A rare breed of loosehead with the right mix of talent that delivers ball-carrying skills and powerful scrumming, Du Toit's development is expected to continue at a rate of knots, surrounded by world-class forwards in Durban.
